The international conference “Semiotic Landscapes of Multilingual Border Regions”

Between November 9 and 11, 2023, the international conference “Semiotic Landscapes of Multilingual Border Regions” took place in Jena, with the participation of researchers from the Institute of Balkan Studies SASA. This is the closing conference of the bilateral project of the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena and the Institute for Balkan Studies SASA, financed by the Ministry of Science, Technological Development and Innovation of the Republic of Serbia in cooperation with the German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst – DAAD).

On the first day of the conference, Annemarie Sorescu-Marinković, Svetlana Ćirković and Anđela Redžić presented their research in the field of linguistic landscape. Annemarie Sorescu-Marinković talked about “Ecolinguistic Landscapes of Eastern Serbia”, while Svetlana Ćirković and Anđela Redžić presented the paper entitled “The LL of Štrpce, border region of Kosovo and Metohija”.

On the second day of the conference, attention was paid to the schooling of linguistic minorities. Rastko Lompar spoke about “The education of Banat minorities (1919-1945)”, in a co-authored presentation with Anđelija Miladinović, while Mirjana Mirić presented her research on “Romani language education in Serbia”. The conference was attended by numerous researchers from the University of Jena, as well as by students who also took part in a workshop organized as part of the conference. Extensive material collected during joint field research within the project was used as the basis for discussion during the workshop.
