EPIC FORMULA: A BALKAN PERSPECTIVE

17. Sep 2015.

The Institute of Balkan studies has just published an edited volume under the title EPIC FORMULA: A BALKAN PERSPECTIVE. The volume edited by Mirjana Detelić and Lidija Delić contains eleven studies which are dedicated to the oral epic formula within the Balkans and Indo-European context. The concept of epic formula was initiated by American scholars, experts for Homeric studies, M. Perry and A.B. Lord. During the 1930s and the 1950s these experts conducted field research among epic bards in Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia-Hercegovina in order to establish the oral origins of Homeric poems. This edited volume covers the epic formula in Albanian, Greek, and Turkish and in particular Serbian / Serbo-Croatian epic tradition with an emphasis on the possible ties to antique and Indo-European heritage.
