Expert Panel at SASA on the Protection of National Minority Rights

On May 21, 2025, the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SASA) hosted an expert panel titled “National and International Standards for the Protection of Minority Rights”, held as part of the project “Ethno-Confessional Minorities in Serbia: Challenges and Perspectives of Human Rights”, led by academician Prof. Dr. Alpar Lošonc.

Dr. Aleksandra Đurić Milovanović, Principal Research Fellow at the Institute for Balkan Studies of SASA, co-organized the panel in collaboration with academician Lošonc. The event brought together prominent experts from the fields of law, sociology, political science, and religious studies, as well as representatives of relevant institutions. The panel speakers included Ms. Brankica Janković (Commissioner for the Protection of Equality); Dr. Goran Bašić (Institute of Social Sciences); Dr. Ljubica Đorđević (European Centre for Minority Issues ECMI); and Dr. Katinka Beretka (Faculty of Law, University Union). Participants discussed current challenges in the protection of minority communities’ rights in Serbia, possibilities for improving institutional mechanisms, and examples of good practices within the European context. The aim of the panel was to encourage interdisciplinary dialogue on enhancing the status of minority communities and to promote human rights standards in accordance with the highest international frameworks.
