International conference "Pope Pius XII and the Challenge of Totalitarianism in Yugoslavia, 1941–1958"

20. Feb 2024.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, February 13th and 14th, 2024, international conference Pope Pius XII and the Challenge of Totalitarianism in Yugoslavia, 1941–1958 was held in Belgrade. It was organized by the Institute for Balkan Studies, Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, with the support of the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia (GRANT N° 7749803, Pope Pius XII and the Challenge of Totalitarianism in Yugoslavia, 1941–1958, Polity).

Alongside with the project members from the Institute for Balkan Studies, the conference saw the participation of colleagues from Italy, Serbia, Great Britain, Germany, France, Slovakia and Croatia. Several participants among them especially members of the project team had based their papers on the research of the recently declassified Vatican sources pertinent to the pontificate of Pius XII, thus giving the conference a distuingished heuristic value. The conference has also served as one of the first occasions to present the hitherto achieved research results of the project Pope Pius XII and the Challenge of Totalitarianism in Yugoslavia, 1941–1958, Polity.
