14th International Conference on Romani Linguistics

The 14th International Conference on Romani Linguistics was organized by the Institute for Balkan Studies SASA and the Committee for the Study of Roma Life and Customs of SASA. The conference was held on 16th and 17th September 2021 in an online format, via Zoom platform.
Seventeen researchers from universities and research centers from Austria, Great Britain, Italy, Germany, Romania, Serbia, France, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and Switzerland participated in the conference. The Participants presented their research in the field of morphology, syntax, language repertoires and discourses and language contacts. The presented research discusses topics related to the case system of the Romani language, structural changes in the Romani language, the influence of majority languages ​​on the structure of the Romani language, the phenomenon of borrowing in Romani, but also borrowing from Romani to majority languages, the role of ideology and identity performance. the discourse of speakers of para-Romani varieties, the use of the Romani language in a religious context, research into the conversion of oral narratives into written ones, new sources for research into the Romani language and the like were presented. The research also includes various dialects and varieties of the Romani language: Central and Vlach dialects, para-Romani varieties used in Italy, Great Britain and Norway, Shinto Rosengro - a variety of the Romani language that is considered extinct.
The scientific committee of the conference consisted of: Yaron Matras, Evangelia Adamou, Svetlana Ćirković and Mirjana Mirić. The organizing committee of the conference consisted of: Tibor Varadi, Anamarija Sorescu Marinkovic, Svetlana Cirkovic and Mirjana Miric.
Svetlana Ćirković, PhD, senior research associate, and Mirjana Mirić, PhD, research associate of the Institute for Balkan Studies SASA, presented a research titled Serbian loanwords in Romani-speaking children’s narratives.
