History of political ideas and institutions in the Balkans in the 19th and 20th centuries

Research on the national integration of the Serbian people and its interaction with national movements in the neighborhood during the liberation process and the process of creating civil society institutions is the basis for studying the relations between the Balkan states during regional and world conflicts that shaped the Balkans and Europe in the 20th century. Special attention is given to the circumstances in which the Serbian people were under foreign rule, the process of creating a Yugoslav state, the role of totalitarian regimes and ideologies in the Balkans and to interethnic relations in communist Yugoslavia. The project involves a comparative historical study of the development of political principles, systems and institutions among the Balkan peoples during the last two centuries of the history of Southeast Europe. The currents of influence of Western European political ideas and institutions, their gradual adoption in the process of overall emancipation of the Balkan peoples on the way to the European model, are examined. In addition to Serbia, the research covers Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Albania, Northern Macedonia and Turkey.
