Researchers of the Institute for Balkan Studies SASA at the Centennial Conference of the Comité International des Sciences Historiques in Leipzig

The Centennial Conference of the Comité International des Sciences Historiques, entitled “The Past, the Present, and the Future of History”, was held in Leipzig, Federal Republic of Germany, from 26 to 29 August 2026.

Researchers of the Institute for Balkan Studies SASA, Dr Marija Vasiljević, Dr Miloš Vojinović, Dr Dragan Bakić, and Dr Bogdan Živković, participated in the conference by organising a panel entitled “Is All History Contemporary History? Serbian and Yugoslav Historiography and Presentism in the Longue Durée”, held on 29 August.

The Institute’s researchers presented papers addressing different aspects of the development of Serbian and Yugoslav historiography. Research Associate Dr Marija Vasiljević spoke on changing political discourses and the historiography of the Middle Ages in Serbia (“Changing Political Discourses and the Historiography of the Middle Ages in Serbia”); Research Associate Dr Miloš Vojinović addressed questions of modernisation and Europeanisation in the historiography of nineteenth-century Serbia (“Modernization and Europeanisation in the Historiography of Nineteen-Century Serbia”); Senior Research Associate Dr Dragan Bakić discussed historiographical debates on Yugoslavia (“Debating Yugoslavia: A History of the Inevitable Historical Process or a History of Utopia?”); while Research Associate Dr Bogdan Živković examined the development of Serbian historiography on socialist Yugoslavia (“Taboos, Ideology, and Escapism: Serbian Historiography on Socialist Yugoslavia”).
