POLITY Project Volume Published by Brill

29. Jul 2026.

We are pleased to announce the publication by Brill, one of the world's leading academic publishing houses, of the edited volume "The Catholic Church and Totalitarianism in Yugoslavia, 1941–1958". It is the second title to appear in the “Publications of the Institute for Balkan Studies of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Art” series published by Brill, as well as the second edited volume produced within the framework of the project “POLITY. Pius XII and Totalitarianism in Yugoslavia, 1941–1958”, funded by the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia and carried out under the leadership of Principal Research Fellow Dr Vojislav G. Pavlović at the Institute for Balkan Studies of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SASA).

The primary objective of the POLITY project was to examine the Vatican's policy toward the Independent State of Croatia and communist Yugoslavia through a critical assessment of the archival holdings of the Holy See, which have only recently become accessible to researchers, together with other relevant archival sources. The contributions included in this volume provide research-based answers to the key questions and issues that shaped the Holy See's policy toward the Yugoslav region during the pontificate of Pope Pius XII.

In addition to members of the POLITY project, the volume includes contributions by scholars from Italy, Slovakia, and the United Kingdom, further enhancing its international character and scholarly significance.

The publication of this volume by one of the world's leading academic publishers constitutes important recognition of the achievements of the POLITY project, as well as of the work of all project collaborators. At the same time, it confirms the international relevance of the research conducted at the Institute for Balkan Studies of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
