International Workshop on Empirical and Psycholinguistic Studies on Balkan Languages (BEPS-2026)

04. Mar 2026.

Senior Research Associate at the Institute for Balkan Studies SASA, Mirjana Mirić, participated in the International Workshop on Empirical and Psycholinguistic Studies on Balkan Languages (BEPS-2026), held on 26–27 February 2026 in Nice, France. The conference was organized by Université Côte d’Azur and the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS).

Mirjana Mirić took part in the organization of the conference and also presented a co-authored paper entitled “Morphological complexity effects in the adaptation of Serbian loan verbs in Gurbet Romani”, co-authored with Marko Simonović (University of Graz) and Bojana Ristić (independent researcher). The paper presents the results of experimental research in the fields of morphology and contact linguistics, with particular emphasis on the psycholinguistic aspects of the adaptation of verbs borrowed from Serbian into the Gurbet variety of Romani. The study resulted from the bilateral project “What’s in a verb? Mapping Serbian verbs borrowed into Romani” (2024–2026), funded under the program of scientific and technological cooperation between the Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Austria.

BEPS-2026 brought together researchers from numerous European countries, with the aim of presenting the latest empirical studies on Balkan languages and fostering further international scientific cooperation in this field.
