Expert Panel on Ethno-Confessional Minorities at SASA

On September 22, 2025, the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SASA) hosted an expert panel titled “Ethno-Confessional Minorities in Serbia: Religion, Identity, and Public Discourse”, held within the framework of the project “Ethno-Confessional Minorities in Serbia: Challenges and Perspectives of Human Rights”, led by Academician Alpar Lošonc. Dr. Aleksandra Djurić Milovanović, Principal Research Fellow at the Institute for Balkan Studies of SANU, co-organized the panel together with Academician Lošonc. The event gathered distinguished experts in political science, anthropology, media, and philology. Speakers included Prof. Dr. Marko Veković (Faculty of Political Science, University of Belgrade), Dr. Angela Ilić (Institute for German Culture and History of Southeastern Europe, LMU Munich), Assistant Professor Dr. Bogdan Drazeta (Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade), Prof. Dr. Jelena Filipović (Faculty of Philology, University of Belgrade), and Jelena Jorgačević Kisić (Vreme weekly). The panel was moderated by Dr. Aleksandra Djurić Milovanović. Participants presented their insights on the ways religious affiliation shapes the identity of minority communities, as well as the importance of interreligious dialogue in our society. The panel also discussed the role of the media in shaping public narratives about religious minorities, challenges in the field of education and language policy, and possibilities for improving public policies toward ethno-confessional minorities.
